BLOOD DIAMOND

I just came back from one of the best films I've seen in a long time...Blood diamond...(thanks jason for posting the trailer)...it was really really good - I was in tears for a good half of the movie - good tears - but don't let that put you off - you have to go and see it!!!!!!!!!!!! I'd say its en par with Hotel Rowanda...

Other than that no news....went to a surgical careers fayre on monday and got completely freaked out...I knew it would be a lot of work and competitive but I don't think I understood just how bad it was, even so I was prepared for the competition part but apparently if you don't make it, you have to side track into a different area like assistant to... from which really hard to get back on course. Anywho, we'll see what happens I guess. Feels very strange, it seem like I've just arrived in England and already they are telling me I'm almost done my 2nd year - This time next year I'll be starting my clinical rotations....i.e. I'll actually have to answer all their questions (CORRECTLY)....I hope I don't choke (as I'm prone to do)...

We learned how to check the peripheral nervous system today...and we practised on each other - of course (apparently according to my 'colleague' I elicit no reflexes...oh well...as long as I can on the actor they bring in for the exam I'll be fine I guess..

Anywho I'm going to leave you now and sleep....class in the morning n all that...

bye bye

christmas 2006

Hi all...Sorry havn't posted in awhile...I've been away for christmas...yay a vacation (sort of)...it was so good to put away books and articles and papers and whatever else I had to do and DO NOTHING....but alas that has ended so here I am back to studying (just thought I'd take a break and tell you all about my christmas)...

Dec. 24 we played carols at marks and spencer (big english department store) and then went to paul and hillary's (deputy bandmaster) - it was really really nice...

Dec. 25 band ensemble went to the hospital to play for the patients (again really really good - we crowded around a patient and played his/her favorite carol...and if they were unconscious or nearly unconscious we kept playing until the heart rate on the monitors increased sufficiently:)
then it was back to paul and hillary's for opening of christmas presents - got loads of stuff - it was very nice...bath stuff, scarf, CHOCOLATE, etc, and a fancy hot water bottle thing (those things actually work - brilliant - am toasty warm now)...then went to a 30min. informal service at the corps followed by supper...it was a time to hang out AND celebrate christmas together - the point was that the corps is like a huge family and so everyone came together to celebrate like a family (a really LARGE family) ...I think every church should do that...

Dec. 26. Went to the selby's in grantham just in time for the boxing day hunt (where all the equestrian people go fox hunting....without actually killing the fox)...once again saw Princess diana's sister - lady Sarah...then loads of people came over and we played pictionary mania (very cool game) and watched con air (very cool movie) - then went to bed

Dec. 27...went to Skegness (the coast) east of grantham...and had a walk along the beach - it was very very cold but beautiful too and we had the two dogs with us

Dec. 28 - on....studied:(

well thats it folks...here are some pic.

Enjoy

Did God create everything that exists?

A University professor at a well-known institution of higher learning
challenged his students with this question. "Did God create everything
that exists?"

A student bravely replied, "Yes he did!" "God created
everything?" "Yes sir, he certainly did," the student
replied.

The professor answered, "If God created everything, then God
created evil. And, since evil exists, and according to the principle that
our works define who we are, then we can assume God is evil."

The student became quiet and did not answer the professor's hypothetical
definition. The professor, quite pleased with himself, boasted to the
students that he had proven once more that religious faith was a myth.

Another student raised his hand and said, "May I ask you a question,
professor?"
"Of course", replied the professor.

The student stood up and asked, "Professor, does cold exist?"
"What kind of question is this? Of course it exists. Have you never been cold?"
The other students snickered at the young man's question.

The young man replied, "In fact sir, cold does not exist. According
to the laws of physics, what we consider cold is in reality the absence of
heat. Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has or
transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-460 F) is the total absence of heat; and all matter
becomes inert and incapable of reaction at that temperature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have no heat."

The student continued, "Professor, does darkness exist?"
The professor responded, "Of course it does."
The student replied, "Once again you are wrong sir, darkness does not exist. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. In fact, we can use Newton's prism to break white light into many colors and study the various wavelengths of each color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Isn't this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present."

Finally the young man asked the professor, "Sir, does evil exist?"
Now uncertain, the professor responded, "Of course, as I have already said.We see it everyday. It is in the daily examples of man's inhumanity to man.
It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These
manifestations are nothing else but evil.

To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist, sir, or at least it
does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like
darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of
God."

"God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does
not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that comes
when there is no heat, or the darkness that comes when there is no light."

The professor sat down. The young man's name? -- Albert Einstein

I like candles

Does anyone know why candles are so mesmerizing??? I could seriously sit and watch a fire for hours....anywho nothing special today...except we took the brain out of our cadaver today...absolutely brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!! - and then I went to a neurology careers forum...must say though - it still doesn't appeal to me quite as much as surgury...but I also found out that under the new employment changes studying in britain really wont help me stand out if I do a specialist training...i.e. if I compete with someone from ???estonia or somewhere in the EU who went to a university that no ones heard off and barely speaks english - they still have to take that person over me...how ridiculous is that...:( Apparently the BMA (british medial association) is speaking to the government on behalf of the international students so hopefully by the time I'm in 5th year - that'll law will change...Anywho I guess I'll burn that bridge when I get there...for now heres my candle (it smells like cranberries!!!)
